Important Fire Alarm Legislation Updates: Is Your House Legal & Safe?
As per the latest fire alarm legislation, existing dwellings must have photoelectric, inter-connected smoke alarms that are no older than 10 years in all hallways and bedrooms by January 1, 2027, with that requirement brought down to January 1, 2022 if you’re leasing or selling your property. Furthermore, if you’re performing a substantial renovation on your home, you’ll need to install fire alarms that meet the above criteria immediately.
We consider it vital for the safety of you and your loved ones to have your smoke alarm safety audited whenever you have an electrician around for a visit. One quick safety check of your alarms could potentially save the lives of you and your family. It’s vital to have a quick check-up performed on them the next time you have an electrician around.
Safety Switch Installation
Safety switches are a vital element of your houses circuitry that prevent electrocution under a circuit overload. All leased properties and properties sold after January 1, 2002 in Queensland require safety switches (or residual current devices) to be installed. Electricians cannot work on a house that does not have a safety switch, unless installing one is part of their service.
With old Queenslander homes that are sometimes up to 100 years old in the local area (Maryborough especially!), there are many that still aren’t equipped with safety switches, posing a grave threat to the safety of the occupants. We cannot stress how important it is to make sure your house is up to date with safety switch and fire alarm legislation. If you’ve got an old house that you think might not pass the standards imposed by legislation, or you simply want a check-up for peace of mind, please give us a call and we’ll have an electrician out to you at your best convenience for a free measure and quote.
